Six Things to Check Before You Redesign Your Website
A fresh design can make a business look more credible and win more enquiries. A redesign without a plan, however, can lose search rankings and repeat problems the old site already had. Check these six things first.
1. Know why you are redesigning
Write down the problem you want to solve: too few enquiries, an outdated look, or a site that is hard to update. A clear goal keeps every later decision on track.
2. Find out what already works
Look at your analytics and see which pages bring visitors and enquiries. Those pages deserve extra care, because they are already earning their place.
3. List your current URLs
If page addresses change, set up redirects from the old ones. This protects your search rankings and stops visitors landing on error pages.
4. Review your content
New design will not rescue unclear text. Decide what to keep, rewrite or remove, and plan who will supply new copy and images.
5. Plan for mobile first
Many visitors will see your site on a phone. Check that menus, forms and buttons are comfortable to use on a small screen.
6. Decide who updates it after launch
Choose a system your team can actually use, and agree who handles updates, backups and security.
